Homeschool Art Classes
When: 2019-2020 School Year
Where: My Home Studio in Pearland

SUPPLY INFORMATION FOR OIL PAINTING

FOR A LIMITED PALETTE – THE COLORS MARKED* ARE ALL THAT ARE REALLY NECESSARY. IF YOU LIKE A COMPLETE PALETTE BUY ALL BELOW, IF YOU WANT TO LIMIT THEN BUY ONLY THE MARKED* COLORS.

SUGGESTED OILS COLORS: Cadmium Yellow Lemon, Cadmium Yellow Light*, Cadmium Orange, Cadmium Red Light*, Cadmium Red, Permanent Alizarin Crimson*, Permanent Green Light, Viridian Green*, Cobalt Blue, Ultramarine Blue*, Transparent Red Oxide (Burnt Sienna)*, Yellow Ochre (or Raw Sienna)*, Titanium White* (Soft formula).

BRUSHES
Natural Bristle Brushes: I use Robert Simmons Signet Flats, they cost more but are worth it. I use size 6 or 8 flats. It is helpful, especially if you have rough canvas, to use a Bright size 8 or 10 (instead of a flat) for the initial stage. The flats are still necessary for the painting stage – or filberts may be used.

OTHER SUPPLIES
Palette for mixing paints. Paper palettes are not good (except in a pinch) because they are light and slide around, making mixing on them difficult. A wood palette is good but must be varnished first. Some use glass or Plexiglas placed in a box with a lid (these can be purchased at the art stores) so that left over paint can be carried home and not wasted. Usually a mid-tone gray or brown paper is placed under the glass. I personally like using disposal grey/mid tone paper palettes.

CANVASES or CANVAS BOARDS or cut plywood with gesso.

Absorbent Paper Towels (Viva or other brand is fine) + a plastic grocery bag

Odorless paint thinner (mineral spirits). I buy an odorless paint thinner from Dick Blick. They do have it. I looked and not found any at Ace Hardware, Michaels or Hobby Lobby.

Palette Knife (Scraper) – medium size. Shape of your choice
