June Class: Words and Mixed Media

IMG_0755[12]
Artful Thursday Class: June 1, 9:30 am – 2:00 pm
Satur-Day of Art Class: no class available this month
Joan’s Studio: 2003 Pleasant Valley Rd, Pearland TX 77581

In this class, we will be choosing a verse or phrase from a song, poem or scripture and creating a unique expression of those words in a mixed media painting. I will demo collage and paper techniques that you can incorporate into your own design.

Come to the class with your phrase or verse already determined!!! Bring your paints, pencils, markers, and stamps. You can bring any size surface to work on but I would encourage you to think about sizes like 9×12, 12×12 and bigger (max. size 16×24). Or, you might even want to choose several smaller sizes like 9×9 and work on 2 to 4 at a time. A stiffer surface like a wood panel or gessoed heavy weight paper can be used though a canvas works too!

I will have deli paper and stencils – available for all.

What you can expect:
Artful Thursdays and Satur-Days of Art are multilevel classes designed to allow anyone to jump in right where you are today in a safe and inspiring class setting. You do NOT have to come with experience. You will be challenged, affirmed and encouraged to get your feet wet, make mistakes and own your personal style and ideas.

We will have a brief opening prayer, instruction on the days assignment, plenty of time to work before and after lunch, time to show any current work(s), share helpful art information or ask a question, and participate in a helpful and supportive critique.

This is a safe place to be yourself and risk trying something new. The goal isn’t perfection but moving forward in art.

Bring: Your lunch, a journal, paints, pencils, brushes, stamps and ideas. For this class, bring the meaningful word or phrase that you will use and the surfaces that you’d like to try (canvas, heavyweight paper, canvas board, etc).

Reminder! Please do not wear fragrances or perfume. In the studio, we are in close quarters and some individuals have severe reactions to them!

Cost: $50, cash or check, due before class starts. You bring your own materials or pay $10 additionally per class to use my materials. You must let me know if you will be using my materials.

Register: Let me know you are coming by emailing me, joan-of-art@sbcglobal.net, or use the form below!

May Class: Inspired by Plants!

plants
May 4
9:30 am – 2:00 pm
Joan’s Studio: 2003 Pleasant Valley Rd, Pearland TX 77581

Plants…any type or color, realistic or abstract. During this Artful Thursday, you will create 4 separate pieces of the same subject during timed sessions, similar to what we did in April’s classes. I will have a plant-inspired still life set up for you in the studio or you can use images that you bring. This promises fun and improves your skill at painting or drawing more loosely.

If you choose to bring an image, PLEASE bring a printed copy instead of using your phone. I will not be able to print images for you during class.

You can focus on painting or drawing your images, OR both…a combo is fine too! Bring paper, watercolor paper that has been gesso-ed AND/OR canvases. Bring pencils, watercolors or acrylic paints. You could just bring all of your supplies and decide on your medium when you get to class!

Artists who regularly draw from real life drastically improve overall. We draw in order to see details, light and shadow, and to understand perspective. It trains our eyes in a way that drawing from a picture can’t.

It’s been said, “If you can draw it, you can paint it.” I believe it! Without this practice, we can begin to rely on photographs or copies. So…whether you do or don’t draw from real life, join us! You will probably surprise yourself.

There will be a still life set up, large paper, drawing pencils and erasers or bring your own. If you want to take your drawing(s) and add watercolor or paint then bring materials to do this.

Opening my Heart and Eyes

IMG_9339.JPG

Made lots of hearts from my old art and will be giving them to those who may feel forgotten or unloved at a women’s shelter. I opened my heart and eyes to give them all away and an opportunity surfaced. I was inspired by Ann Voskamp’s book, The Broken Way, to look for ways to anonymously love and support another. I would encourage you to consider how to spread loving-kindness to the people you see in your world.

Finding Your Word

woy2017

In my January classes one of the things we shared about was the practice of selecting a Word of the Year. There are lots of websites about the Word of the Year concept available on the internet this year! Use them to make it an easier process for you. Don’t make it harder than need be. I used some of Christine Kaine’s information to help me, available here (http://christinekane.com/wordoftheyear).

I also like to chose a Bible Verse of the Year that coincides with my Word of the Year. I would encourage you to write out the following (also from Christine’s material):

  • 3 ways to be
  • 3 ways to connect with others
  • 3 things you want to have
  • 3 things you want to do

These concepts may help guide you on how you’re thinking about the upcoming year. Be sure to use “I” statements all the way through and be as detailed as you can for each point. Don’t limit yourself and allow yourself to dream really big.

When I’m going through this process I set aside time to pray and take a few hours to collect my thoughts and write them down. I’m encouraging you to do the same. You won’t regret it.

Here are some great words just to get your brain started:
Mindfulness, Abundance, Space, Intentional, Finish, Humility, Breathe, Focus, Awake, Emerge, Passion, Simplify, Permission, Rebuilding, Diligence, Open, Centered, Connect, Forward, Soar, Meek, Balance, Nurture, Bless, Joy, Faith, Thrive, Embrace, Celebrate, Empower, Fortitude, Silence, Adventure, Intuitive, Commit, Choose, Gratitude, Feast, Today, Possibility, Focus, Grace, Generous, Relentless, Trust, Resolve, Transformation, Love, Stewardship, Determined, Brave, Battle, Believe, Change, Adapt, Unstoppable, Write, More, Pause, Action, Curious, Persistence, Ignite, Ambition, Slow, Organize, Perspective, Opportunity, Present, Connect, Shine, Courage, Together, Direction, Different, Release, No, New, Sacrifice, Dare, Discover, Expansion, Magnify, Delight, Reflection, Create, Minimize, Alignment, Whole, Zest, Smile, Strength, Risk, Truth, Freedom, Purpose, Foster, Reduce, Be, Enjoy, Health, Revel, Presence, Imagine, Growth, Transition, Confidence, , Uplift, Learn, Relax, Selah, Optimism, Aware, Resolute, Hope Live, Listen, Invest, Momentum, Integrity, Push, Appreciate, Peace, Adventure, Progress, Journey.

I encourage the artists that I coach and many of my art students to create a vision board with their word and verse of the year. A vision board is any sort of board on which you display words, statements and images that represent whatever you want to be, do or have in your life. If you do create a vision board, display it for yourself somewhere that you will naturally see it during your day. Mine is on the garage wall just to the left of my driver-side window. I see it often!

Also, I realize that it’s already the end of the January. If you hear your inner critic trying to make you feel bad about not having your word already, give her the boot! This practice has added such value to my year, I would encourage you not to give up and join us in choosing your word.
